Dave Olberding

Dave Olberding

Jack Sieforth informed me that our friend, Dave Olberding, has passed away.  I was able to find his obituary, which follows below.  He lived in Mooresville, North Carolina, when he died.  Rest in peace, old friend.

David John Olberding, 72, passed away peacefully Friday, April 6, 2018, in Mooresville, surrounded by his immediate family. Dave was born July 31, 1945 in Portland, Ore. and was the fourth oldest of a dozen children. He emerged as a rebellious teen, challenging authority, determined to make a good life in a new way. Dave was an artist, creator, inventor, brilliant designer and master craftsman until the day he died. He was a loving father, grandfather, and a favorite uncle. He had a sense of humor that was somewhat askew and his storytelling was legendary. He was a charismatic person that made friends easily and everywhere. Dave married Jane Kelly in 1968, and the two moved to Lincoln, Mass., where Dave studied architectural design. In 1974, after the birth of their son Nick, the family moved to Port Townsend, Wash., where they built a wood shop and house where Liz, Gus, and Claire were born at home. With the Grateful Dead cranking in the shop, Dave worked with wood and became well known for his custom cabinets and kitchen design, and built boats, toys, and furniture. In 1980, the family moved to Portland, Ore., where Dave continued to develop his skills in design in corporate America and began designing, building, and leasing trade show booths. He was quite successful until sickness gripped his life. After fighting cancer and ultimately surviving a bone marrow transplant, Dave moved to Mooresville in 2005 to be near his son, Gus. During his time in North Carolina, Dave had several more serious health crises which he faced with strength, courage, and an epic sense of humor. In spite of these challenges, his creativity and productivity could not be stopped. He continued to build toys for his children and grandchildren, and furniture for friends and family. His most recent project was building the new Salty's Of Lake Norman. His productivity, in spite of his health challenges, is nothing short of remarkable. His heart was strong! Dave was immensely proud of his four children of whom he would boast to anyone and everyone. His children remember him as strong, passionate, and loving. Dave encouraged his children to follow their hopes and dreams (his phrase) and instilled in each of them that they could accomplish anything. Dave wished that there be no religious ceremony and no gatherings or celebration other than among his kids. He wished that his ashes be shot to the moon. Please send any stories you'd like to share about Dave to tothemoon@daveolberding.com.

I can't imagine a better tribute than to have your children speak this highly of you.  Well done, Dave!  You will be missed by your classmates, as well.
