Jon Phillippi

Jon Phillippi

Dear Classmates,

I just received a very sad text from Jon Phillippi's wife, Joy.  Jon passed away last night, March 11, 2025, after being struck by a car while riding his bike, as he did every day.  He was taken to a trauma center with a collapsed lung and other injuries.  Joy was with him and he was stable and talking.  They moved him to ICU where he had a heart attack and passed away.  Jon had a son of his own, Tyler, and was stepfather and grandfather to Joy's children and grandchildren.

Jon was my brother-in-law before Ross and I divorced and we had remained friends throughout the years.  We talked on the phone once or twice a year and he always wanted to know how everyone in the class was doing, especially those who went to Cedar Hill with us.  Phillippis lived at the corner of Faircrest and Huntington, for those who remember that neighborhood. He was a good man and will be missed by many of us. Rest in peace, my friend and brother.

Jon Barton Phillippi of Jupiter, Florida died unexpectedly on March 12, 2025.  He was born on December 22, 1945 to Ross and Patricia Phillippi.

Jon was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.  He leaves behind so many cherished memories and a legacy of strength, kindness, humility, and warmth that touched the lives of all who knew him.  He was a man among men.

Born and raised in Westmoreland, Oregon, Jon spent his early childhood years with his siblings, Ross Phillippi and Jan Phillippi. The family later moved to their cattle ranch in Glenwood, Washington, where Jon embraced the lifestyle of a true cowboy, developing a strong work ethic and deep appreciation for ranch life and the outdoors. Eventually, the family moved back to Cedar Hills, Oregon, where Jon played football and attended Sunset High School, spending his summers working at the ranch and National Parks or enjoying their vacation cottage at Rockaway Beach.

Jon earned his bachelor's degree in Physical Education from Colorado State University and later completed a Master's Degree at Eastern New Mexico University. He was an avid skier and enjoyed the slopes in Oregon, Colorado, and Switzerland. The mountains were his passion, leading him to return to Colorado after college as the Lift Manager for Vail Resorts and serving as an Army Reservist.

Jon eventually joined Trans World Airlines (TWA), where he worked in Inflight Services Management Positions for over 20 years. Throughout his tenure, he was based in Chicago, Los Angeles, Kansas City, and St. Louis, traveling extensively and exploring destinations around the world. Jon is remembered for his professionalism and dedication to excellence inspiring those who worked with him.

Jon was previously married and has a son, Tyler Jon Phillippi, with whom he treasured spending time traveling and sharing adventures.  Jon later married Joy Williams, whom he met at TWA and has celebrated 32 wonderful years of love and dedication to one another. Jon and Joy blended their families and together returned to Jon's beloved mountains in Colorado, where Jon served as Director of Human Resources at Keystone, Breckenridge, and Vail Resorts.  Their lives were work and lots of fun adventures including exploring nature, Jon’s Harley Davidsons, Corvette collection, traveling, hiking, boating and skiing.  Jon and Joy eventually settled in Jupiter Florida where they have resided for 21 years.

He had so many accomplishments in life, but his greatest contribution was the love, guidance and commitment with which he raised their children.  He later provided that same love guidance and commitment in raising four of their grandchildren. Jon’s family describes him as “our strength, our security, our constant, and our home”.  He taught them about the world, nature and humanity.

Jon is survived by his wife Joy Phillippi, his son Tyler Phillippi (Kassia Shishkoff), his step-son David Zipsir, his Granddaughters; Ali Sweet (Kenny), Isabella Falcone, Olivia Falcone, Gianna Falcone, Ava Zipsir and Emma Zipsir, Great Granddaughters; Raine Falcone and Charlotte Sweet, and his dog Sky. Jon also leaves behind his best friends Gene Spinner and Mike O’Halloran. Jon was predeceased by his parents, his brother Ross, his sister Jan and his step-daughter, Heidi Falcone.

Oh, this news just breaks my heart.  I went to Cedar Hills Grade School with Jon and then on to high school.  He was a wonderful kid, and I regret that we lost touch after graduating from Sunset.  He was one of my favorites way back then, and I am glad I knew him during those years.
